Project Overview

Proseq was engaged by Akvotek to deliver the complete automation solution for an advanced industrial water treatment facility in Doha, Qatar.

The project centred on designing, manufacturing and commissioning a fully customised control system to manage dual Microfiltration (MF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration trains, integrated with a Chemical Cleaning (CIP) system.

From concept through to commissioning, Proseq was responsible for developing the automation platform that allowed the treatment process to operate safely, efficiently and reliably while integrating seamlessly with the site's existing Distributed Control System (DCS).

Working closely with Akvotek throughout the project, Proseq provided specialist automation, electrical and process engineering expertise from initial design through to successful site commissioning.

The Challenge

This was far more than a standard automation project.

The treatment process incorporated new recycling technology designed to recover and reuse process water generated during PVC manufacturing—technology that had not previously been proven in a live production environment.

The project presented several significant engineering and logistical challenges, including:

  • Designing a completely bespoke automation platform from the ground up

  • Developing control strategies for dual MF and RO treatment trains with integrated CIP sequencing

  • Integrating Siemens PLC and HMI systems with the client's existing DCS

  • Delivering a solution for an explosion-protected petrochemical environment

  • Managing hazardous area electrical requirements

  • Designing electrical panels capable of operating reliably in ambient temperatures exceeding 50°C

  • Coordinating engineering activities across multiple international teams while maintaining strong communication and safety standards

  • Managing international logistics to ensure control panels arrived safely and on schedule

  • Navigating complex industrial security clearances, site access requirements and working visas

  • Supporting a project that evolved over more than five years as process technology continued to develop and mature

These challenges required flexibility, detailed planning and close collaboration between Proseq, Akvotek and the client throughout every stage of the project.

The Solution

Proseq delivered a complete end-to-end automation solution tailored specifically for the facility.

Our scope included:

  • Developing the Functional Design Specification (FDS) from the client's process requirements

  • Electrical schematic design and panel layouts

  • Control panel design and manufacture

  • Siemens PLC software development

  • HMI development and operator interface design

  • Process sequencing and interlock development

  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) & software simulation

  • Integration with the site's Distributed Control System (DCS)

  • Alarm management and diagnostics

  • Site commissioning and start-up

  • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)

  • Live process optimisation and operator training

Throughout commissioning, Proseq worked closely with operators and process engineers to fine-tune control strategies and optimise plant performance under real operating conditions.

Results

The completed project delivered a reliable and highly automated treatment system capable of recovering valuable process water for reuse within the manufacturing facility.

Project outcomes included:

  • Successful implementation of an advanced water recycling process

  • Recovery and reuse of high-value desalinated process water

  • Improved overall plant efficiency

  • Stable and consistent process control

  • Reduced manual operator intervention

  • Increased operational reliability

  • Improved alarm diagnostics and fault management

  • Enhanced maintainability of the automation platform

  • Successful commissioning with minimal disruption to operations

  • Delivery of a scalable automation solution capable of supporting future plant expansion

By enabling the recycling of wastewater generated during PVC production, the facility significantly reduced the loss of expensive desalinated water while improving the overall sustainability of the manufacturing process.

Proseq's Value

This project showcases Proseq's capability to deliver complex industrial automation solutions for major international infrastructure projects.

From initial process design through electrical engineering, panel manufacture, PLC development and commissioning, Proseq provided a complete turnkey automation solution tailored to the client's operational requirements.

Working alongside Akvotek, the project demonstrated Proseq's ability to deliver technically advanced control systems in demanding industrial environments while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety and engineering excellence.
