S7 / TIA Portal Upgrade – FAQs

What is an S7 / TIA Portal upgrade?

1

An S7 / TIA Portal upgrade involves migrating your existing Siemens S7 PLC projects from older versions of Step 7 or early TIA Portal releases to the current TIA Portal platform. This may also include upgrading PLC hardware (such as S7-300 or S7-400 systems) to newer platforms like S7-1200 or S7-1500 to ensure long-term support, improved performance and compatibility.

Why should we upgrade our existing S7 system?

2

Older PLC platforms and software versions eventually become unsupported, harder to maintain and incompatible with newer engineering tools. Upgrading improves reliability, cybersecurity, engineering efficiency and spare parts availability. It also ensures your system can integrate with modern HMIs, drives and higher-level data systems.

Will upgrading cause production downtime?

3

Downtime can be minimised with proper planning. Proseq conducts a structured assessment, creates a staged upgrade plan and performs offline testing before implementation. Where possible, upgrades are scheduled during planned shutdowns to reduce operational disruption.

Can existing PLC code be reused?

4

In most cases, yes. Existing logic can often be migrated and optimised within TIA Portal. However, some code restructuring may be required depending on the original platform, firmware version and hardware configuration. We validate all functionality to ensure the upgraded system performs as intended.

Do we need to replace our PLC hardware?

5

Not always. If your hardware is compatible with newer TIA Portal versions, a software upgrade may be sufficient. However, for legacy systems such as S7-300 or S7-400, hardware migration to S7-1500 may be recommended to ensure long-term support and improved performance.

Running unsupported software or obsolete PLC hardware increases the risk of unexpected downtime, security vulnerabilities and difficulty sourcing spare parts. It can also limit your ability to expand or integrate your automation system in the future.

Project duration depends on system complexity, number of PLCs, network architecture and whether hardware replacement is required. After an initial assessment, Proseq provides a clear scope, timeline and staged implementation plan.

Yes. We manage the full upgrade process including code migration, simulation testing, on-site commissioning, validation and documentation updates. Our goal is a smooth transition with minimal operational risk.
